Export to Dropbox
Mapit GIS can export projects and layers directly to your Dropbox account. Files are stored in the /Apps/Mapit GIS/ app folder on Dropbox, making them easy to access from any device or desktop.
This is useful for backing up field data, transferring projects between devices, or sharing files with colleagues.
- Android
- iOS
Connecting Your Dropbox Account
Before exporting, you need to link your Dropbox account:
- Open Settings from the main menu.
- Navigate to Remote Connections → Dropbox.
- Tap Connect and sign in with your Dropbox credentials.
- Once connected, your account name and email are displayed in the settings screen.
You only need to connect once. The app stores your authentication securely and refreshes it automatically.
Exporting a Project
- Open the Projects screen from the main menu.
- Tap the project you want to export. The project card expands to reveal action buttons.
- Tap the Export button (share icon).
- In the export destination sheet, select Dropbox.
- A progress dialog shows the upload status.
- On completion, the
.gpkgfile is available in your Dropbox under/Apps/Mapit GIS/.
Exporting a Layer
- Open the Layers screen within a project.
- Long-press the layer you want to export.
- Tap Export from the context menu and choose a format (GeoJSON, CSV, KML, or Shapefile).
- In the export destination sheet, select Dropbox.
- The exported file is uploaded to
/Apps/Mapit GIS/on Dropbox.
Importing from Dropbox
You can also import files back from Dropbox:
- From the Projects or Layers screen, tap Import → Dropbox.
- A file browser displays the files in your
/Apps/Mapit GIS/folder, filtered to supported formats. - Select a file to download and import it into the app.
Supported import formats:
| Screen | Supported Formats |
|---|---|
| Projects | .gpkg (GeoPackage) |
| Layers | .geojson, .json, .csv, .kml, .zip (Shapefile) |
Disconnecting
To unlink your Dropbox account:
- Open Settings → Remote Connections → Dropbox.
- Tap Disconnect.
This removes the stored tokens from the device. Files already uploaded to Dropbox are not affected.
Dropbox export requires the Import/Export entitlement, available on Pro and Pro+ tiers.
Connecting your Dropbox account
Before any of the import / export flows below show Dropbox options, you need to link your account once:
- Open Settings from the main menu.
- Tap Remote Connections → Dropbox.
- Tap Connect to Dropbox. The Dropbox sign-in page opens in a secure in-app browser sheet — sign in and authorise Mapit GIS.
- The sheet closes automatically and your account name and email appear in the connected state. A green checkmark next to Dropbox in the Remote Connections list confirms the link.
The sign-in flow uses OAuth 2.0 with PKCE — Mapit GIS never sees your Dropbox password. Tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain and refreshed automatically when they expire, so you should only need to sign in once per device. See Remote Connections for the full Settings reference.
Exporting a project to Dropbox
- Open the Projects screen from the main menu.
- Tap the ⋯ menu on the project row (or long-press the row to use the context menu) and choose Export.
- The export sheet appears. When a Dropbox account is connected, you see three destinations:
- Save to Files
- Share
- Upload to Dropbox
- Tap Upload to Dropbox. A progress overlay shows the upload status and the filename being transferred.
- When the upload finishes, a banner reports success and the
.gpkgfile is available in your Dropbox under/Apps/Mapit GIS/.
If you have not connected Dropbox yet, the Upload to Dropbox option does not appear in the export sheet — connect first from Settings.
Project export is gated by the Import/Export entitlement, available on Pro and Pro+ tiers. The Dropbox destination is included in the same gate — no extra subscription is needed beyond what local export already requires.
Exporting a layer to Dropbox
- Open the Layers screen for the active project.
- Tap the ⋯ menu on the layer row and choose Export.
- The Export Layer sheet opens. Pick a format (GeoJSON, ArcJSON, KML, CSV, GPX, DXF, or Shapefile) and, if the format supports it, a target CRS.
- Under Destination, tap Upload to Dropbox. A progress bar shows the upload fraction next to the button.
- The exported file is uploaded to
/Apps/Mapit GIS/on Dropbox and a confirmation banner shows the uploaded filename.
Uploading a layer to Dropbox requires the Pro+ (Export All) entitlement. Tapping the button on a lower tier opens the paywall. Local export to Files or Share is available on lower tiers.
Importing a project from Dropbox
- Open the Projects screen.
- Tap the + button. The Add Project sheet appears with three options:
- Create New
- Import Project
- Import from Dropbox
- Tap Import from Dropbox. The Dropbox file browser opens, showing
.gpkgfiles in your/Apps/Mapit GIS/folder. - Tap a file. A progress overlay shows the download, then the project is registered and appears in the projects list.
If a project with the same name already exists, Mapit GIS automatically appends (1), (2), … to avoid overwriting your existing project.
The Import from Dropbox row only appears when an account is linked. If you don't see it, connect Dropbox first from Settings → Remote Connections → Dropbox.
Importing a layer from Dropbox
- Open the Layers screen for the active project.
- Tap the + Import Layer button.
- In the import sheet, scroll to From Dropbox and tap it. The Dropbox file browser opens, showing supported layer files in your
/Apps/Mapit GIS/folder. - Tap a file to download and import it.
Supported layer formats from Dropbox: .geojson, .json, .csv, .kml, .gpx, .zip (Shapefile bundle), and .dxf. GeoJSON imports are automatically reprojected to WGS 84 when the source uses a different CRS — no manual reprojection step is needed.
Where files live on Dropbox
Every Mapit GIS upload — projects and layers — goes to the same app-folder:
/Apps/Mapit GIS/
Mapit GIS only has access to this folder, not your whole Dropbox account. You can browse it on dropbox.com, in the desktop Dropbox app, or in any other Dropbox client — it's a normal folder.
Disconnecting
To unlink your Dropbox account from this device:
- Open Settings → Remote Connections → Dropbox.
- Tap Disconnect from Dropbox and confirm.
This removes the stored access and refresh tokens from the Keychain. Files already on Dropbox are not affected — you can sign back in later and they'll still be there.
