Layer Styling
Customise the visual appearance of your layers to improve map readability and highlight important features. Mapit GIS Professional supports both uniform styling and conditional styling based on attribute values.
Accessing Layer Styling
- Open Main Menu → Manage Layers
- Select the layer you want to style
- Tap the Edit option
- The layer editor opens with styling options
Basic Styling Properties
Stroke Colour
The outline colour for all geometry types (points, lines, and polygons). Tap the colour swatch to open the colour picker and choose from predefined colours or enter a custom value.
Fill Colour
The interior colour for points and polygons. Not applicable to line geometries. Supports transparency for overlapping features.
Style by Attribute Value
Apply different colours to features based on their attribute values. This creates a thematic map where visual appearance reflects data categories - for example, displaying different tree species in different colours, or highlighting inspection status.
When to Use
Style by attribute is useful when you want to:
- Categorise features by type (e.g., tree species, pipe material)
- Highlight status or condition (e.g., inspected/not inspected)
- Show priority or severity levels
- Visualise any categorical data
Adding a Style Rule
- In the layer editor, scroll to the Style by Attribute section
- Tap the + button to add a new style rule
- Configure the rule:
- Field: Select the attribute field to base styling on
- Value: Enter the specific value to match
- Colour: Choose the colour for features matching this value
- Save the rule
- Repeat to add rules for additional attribute values
Editing a Style Rule
Tap on an existing style rule to open it for editing. Modify the field, value, or colour as needed, then save your changes.
Deleting a Style Rule
Select the style rule you want to remove, then tap Delete.
Default Style
Features that don't match any style rule will use the layer's default styling (stroke colour and fill colour). Make sure your default style provides a good fallback appearance for uncategorised features.
Example: Tree Species Styling
| Field | Value | Colour |
|---|---|---|
| species | Oak | Brown |
| species | Maple | Orange |
| species | Pine | Dark Green |
| species | Birch | Light Grey |
Trees with species values not matching any rule will display in the default layer colour.
Styling Best Practices
- Contrast: Choose colours that stand out against your basemap
- Consistency: Use the same colour scheme across related layers
- Accessibility: Avoid red/green only combinations for colour-blind users
- Simplicity: Limit the number of style rules to maintain map readability
- Testing: View your styled layer at different zoom levels to verify visibility
